Currently, 2,000 high school students are engaged in an initiative that connects advanced science with dialogue in society. The idea is simple yet powerful: students take in advanced scientific knowledge, digest it on their own, and then explain it in public settings\u2014deepening their learning through this process of output. By placing emphasis on expression rather than one-way input, the program brings this new style of learning into secondary education, where public praise and encouragement boost students\u2019 self-confidence. Repeated cycles of sharing and feedback motivate them to act of their own accord, and the surprise of seeing society respond to their efforts fosters a deep sense of engagement. Already involving several hundred active participants, the project has become a small but genuine first step toward influencing society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years after its conception, in 2023, the project was formally adopted into the school curriculum at an ordinary private school\u2014Osaka High School. Its launch brought both tension and expectation: some teachers worried about the added burden, while others looked forward to the educational impact such a large-scale effort might bring. With this mix of concerns and hopes, the N Project began in earnest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In practice, students receive continuous input through classes led by scientists and cross-curricular lessons by teachers, who weave scientific themes across both humanities and science subjects. After this input, students who wish to take part in public outreach step forward: 136 students in the first year (about 6% of the school) and 197 in the second year (over 10%). Participation by humanities students also rose, from 40% in the first year to 50% in the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stages for these student presentations have been remarkably diverse: elderly facilities, shopping centers, science museums, elementary and junior high schools, international conferences, and even the press conference at Kyoto University. Despite dealing with the same scientific themes, each student uses a hand-drawn sketchbook to present in a uniquely personal way. These sketchbooks, far from being simple props, become powerful tools that touch people\u2019s hearts and prevent conversations from losing their spark\u2014one reason the project has been praised internationally as embodying the \u201cA\u201d in STEAM education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listeners are often moved by the students\u2019 words and passion, while the students, in turn, gain dramatic boosts in self-confidence through the praise they receive. As a result, both speaker and audience cultivate scientific literacy together. At the close of each session, students almost always say, \u201cI wish I had more time to talk.\u201d Their visible growth in those moments often moves the teachers watching from the sidelines as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
