Dr. Nakamura, the representative of this project, has been working since 2006 to realize a society with a deeper understanding of science. Based in Chiba City, he traveled across Japan\u2014from Nemuro in Hokkaido, the easternmost city of Japan \u2014 to host classrooms that delivered cutting-edge science to communities nationwide. More than 12,000 participants attended these sessions, and surveys consistently gave high evaluations. Encouraged by this, he felt a certain confidence in the value and educational impact of providing scientific input.
However, a reassessment carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed a sobering truth: those with little interest in science were not participating at all. In other words, one-way, lecture-based teaching merely provided temporary knowledge to those who were already interested, but failed to spark curiosity among the very people who felt distant from science\u2014the group that should have been the most important target. The result was shocking, and it shattered the complacency he had unconsciously carried for years.
Through this difficult experience, he came to a new realization: to ignite interest in science among those who feel detached from it, what is needed is an environment where people\u2014regardless of whether they study humanities or sciences\u2014can actively connect science with their own daily lives, and find their personal point of contact with society through science.
With this in mind, he chose a general high school, which reflects the broader balance of academic levels and humanities\u2013science ratio in society, as the stage for the project. Together with all 2,000 students at the school\u2014including 1,400 in the humanities track\u2014and in collaboration with the wider community, he launched an initiative to foster scientific literacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
