New Research Reactor Development and Utilization Center

Kyoto University,
together with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and the University of Fukui, will promote efforts to realize an attractive new research reactor.

The new research reactor will be constructed at the site of the prototype fast breeder reactor “Monju” in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture.

In close collaboration with JAEA and the University of Fukui, the Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science, Kyoto University (KURNS), will lead the planning and implementation of the development of advanced experimental equipment and the establishment of an efficient operation system, drawing on the knowledge and experience gained through the operation of KUR and KUCA, with the aim of making the new research reactor attractive to the academic community, industry, and local society.

This center, newly established at KURNS in 2021, plays a central role in continuously promoting the proactive involvement of KURNS toward the start-up of the new research reactor.

This center is currently actively studying the following issues in the new research reactor.

Issues

  1. Neutron beam experimental equipment and neutron irradiation experimental equipment.
  2. Hot laboratories and associated experimental equipment.
  3. Digital Transformation (DX)
  4. Management system of the new research reactor.
  5. Human resource development and industrial utilization of the new research reactor.
