1. Message from the Director

新試験研究炉の基本構成を設定するための活動が始まりました。本研究所には、関連する学術団体のニーズの集約・整理とそれに基づいたニーズの研究炉本体への設計へ反映と、逆に設計からの研究炉の性能・性質の学術団体へのフィードバック・意見調整が期待されています。この作業は困難を伴う事が予測されますが、同時に作業完遂時には本研究所の価値を高めるとともに、研究所自体の将来活動の展望も拓けると確信しております。 そこで、この困難作業を遂行するために本研究所に新試験研究炉開発・利用センターを設置し、活動を開始しています。本学の皆様に置かれましてはそれぞれの専門分野について情報共有と活動への便宜にご協力をお願いいたします。

2. Overview of the New Research Reactor Development and Utilization Center

2-1. Basic Policy

Purpose of installation

While the main purpose of the new research reactor under consideration for installation is to utilize neutron beams, another feature of the research reactor is that it can be used for multipurpose purposes. In order to realize the establishment of a useful research facility that combines both of these features, it is necessary to gather a wide range of opinions from related academic societies and industry, and to develop a well-balanced plan. In May 2021, the Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science, Kyoto University (KURNS) established the New Research Reactor Development and Utilization Center, which comprises researchers and engineers in related fields (the Japanese name was renamed in May 2024). This center aims to be an attractive facility for users. Toward this goal, we are organizing needs and identifying priority items by actively exchanging and collecting opinions with various communities and academic experts involved in the use of research reactors, such as the Japanese Society for Neutron Science, the Japan Society of Nuclear and Radiochemical Sciences, and the Material Science and Technology Division of the Atomic Energy Society of Japan, and by drawing on our experience in operating the use of Kyoto University Research Reactor (KUR).

2-2. Role of the Center

We are studying neutron experimental devices that maximize the performance of the Medium Power Reactor, and are also examining a wide range of sustainable utilization operations. In addition, we are also studying experimental equipment that has a good balance of versatility, advanced features, and diversity that characterize the new research reactor, aiming for multi-purpose use including neutron irradiation use while focusing on neutron beam use as the main purpose.

2-3. Contents of the Study

The specific items being considered are as follows:

Consideration of the installation of experimental equipment that will contribute to the activation of cutting-edge research

  • Study of equipment for neutron beam experiments
  • Study of beam transport systems and a cold neutron source to maximize neutron beam utilization efficiency
  • Study of irradiation equipment for neutron activation analysis, etc.

Consideration of a management system that contributes to widespread, active, and smooth use

  • Collecting information on the management systems of research reactors around the world
  • Collecting information on the management systems of major quantum beam facilities
  • Consider building a management system that will facilitate smooth use by a wide range of users

Consideration of measures to contribute to the training of the next generation of human resources who will play a central role in the utilization of research reactors

  • Consideration of carrying out preparatory research, including practical training and industrial use, utilizing facilities at KURNS (KUR, KUCA, proton cyclotron, etc.)
  • Consideration of utilizing the research network established at KURNS and other neutron facilities

Survey on experimental equipment to activate industrial utilization

  • Survey on equipment and experimental environments aimed at promoting active use in industry
  • Study on irradiation equipment for research RI production and its operation
  • Study on neutron beam equipment for industrial use and its operation
